HANGU: Security forces killed 35 terrorists in clashes in Lower Orakzai Agency on Monday.

The forces said two security personnel were killed, nine were injured and six went missing in the clashes.

Reports said the terrorists attacked the security forces in Shireen Darra and Songrani Feroz Khel areas and the clashes continued for three hours. The deceased security personnel were identified as Havaldar Zaman and Lance Naik Sajid.

ISPR: An ISPR press release said a group of 70 to 80 “heavily-armed terrorists” attacked the security force checkpost in Shireen Darra. “Security forces retaliated causing heavy casualties to the terrorists,” it added.

The security forces have stepped up assaults in the northwest over the past year, largely clearing Taliban from the Swat valley, South Waziristan and Bajaur agencies along the Afghan border.

Fighting has intensified in recent weeks in Orakzai and the neighbouring Khyber region, where officials said terrorists who fled the earlier sweeps had taken refuge. Military officials said a large number of Taliban terrorists are believed to have taken shelter in Tirah Valley.

Tirah is a forested area on the borders of Orakzai, Khyber and Afghanistan and is a stronghold of the Lashkar-e-Islam.
